Dry Skin Over 50?| Why You Need to Exfoliate
You’re not dreaming. Your skin may be dryer and isn’t as glowy as it used to be. It seems that when I turned 50, my once youthful skin has slowly begun to get dryer and I’m seeing fine lines appearing around my eyes and mouth. This guide will tell you how and why you need to exfoliate your dry skin.
I spoke with Caelynn Christoff, a certified esthetician who told me that exfoliating is one of the best things we can do for our dry skin over 50. The reason is our skin sheds cells like crazy, but they hold onto healthy skin. This results in our skin looking dull, clogs our pores, and emphasizes our lines and wrinkles.
As we age, it becomes more important to exfoliate in order to combat the effects of dry skin, slow skin turnover, and worsening fine lines and wrinkles. Regular exfoliation also allows our skincare products to better penetrate the skin to provide the desired results.
Why Dry Skin Is A Concern For The Middle-Age Woman.
Caelynn explains that “As time goes on, our skin cells regenerate slower and slower. This process is called skin cell mitosis. Once our skin cells regenerate we have a completely new appearance to our skin.”
“When we are 14 years old this is great because in 2 weeks we have new skin and our acne is gone. Unfortunately, when we are midway through life, it takes 3 months for our skin cells to regenerate. This means our new anti-aging serum doesn’t appear to be working until we have been using our product for months!,” says Ms. Christoff
“The good news is there is hope. We just have to be patient with our skin. It can and will get better with a consistent skincare routine involving exfoliation.”
What Can I Do To Give My Skin A More Youthful Appearance?
“You can trick your skin cells into thinking that it’s time to regenerate!”, says Caelynn. “You can do this with regular exfoliation.”
“You want to be careful not to over-exfoliate because that can be damaging, but exfoliating once or twice a week can be widely beneficial. Not only for your face but for your entire body.”
How Do I Exfoliate My Dry Skin The Right Way?
Caelynn goes on to say, “For your body, I would suggest either exfoliating gloves or sugar scrubs. Salt scrubs can be extremely drying and later have the reverse effect.”
“For your face, I would recommend either an at-home enzyme mask or micro-exfoliating scrub. Enzymes are naturally found in produce like pumpkins. These enzymes trick the skin into thinking it’s time to regenerate.”
“Please be careful to get a micro-exfoliating scrub. Larger scrubs can pull at the skin and tear it causing unnecessary damage.”
How Often Should I Exfoliate?
“Exfoliating your skin too frequently can increase redness, sensitivity, and the appearance of veins on your face.” Caelynn reiterates. “I suggest you exfoliate once or twice a week depending on your skin.”
“Some people will have skin that thrives with a weekly exfoliation and others won’t see a difference without exfoliating twice a week. You really need to experiment and find what’s right for you.”
